Get started

The four steps of the setup guide on the app’s Home page.

  1. Turn on Live Shoppers in your theme

The theme editor opens with the app embed already switched on. Click Save there, and your store is live.

  2. Choose how lively your store feels

Pick Calm, Balanced or Lively: viewer badges, live cursors and the corner, in one go. Watch it in the preview, then fine-tune any part later.

  3. See it live with a test run

For an hour your store runs as during a campaign, with your real shoppers, and only you see it, through a link.

  4. Schedule your first campaign

Live cursors switch on while a campaign runs.

Optional

Add the product page block and the Shop together button

In the theme editor, add them as app blocks: choose Add block, then Apps. App blocks need an Online Store 2.0 theme, like every free Shopify theme since 2021.

Guides

Campaigns

Live cursors switch on while a campaign runs. To plan one, open Campaigns in the app:

  1. Pick a template: flash sale, product drop, Black Friday and more.
  2. Start it now, or at a date and time you choose.
  3. Set how long it runs: up to 24 hours on Free, 5 days on Boost and 30 days on Momentum.
  4. Choose where cursors appear: the whole store, or any mix of products, collections and pages.

Changed your mind? Ending a campaign within 10 minutes of starting gives it back.

Customize the look in the theme editor

In Shopify, go to Online Store › Themes › Customize › App embeds › Live Shoppers. There you can set:

  • Style: Classic, Liquid glass, Soft clay, Ink, Sticker or Aurora.
  • Test view: sample shoppers on your own theme while you work. Only you see them.
  • Viewer badges: their position on the image, Dark, Light or custom colors, the font, and a pulsing live dot.
  • Cursors: the style (Classic arrow, Rounded arrow, Dot or Name tag only), the colors (one per shopper, or your brand color) and your own cursor icon (Momentum).
  • The live shoppers corner: bottom left or bottom right.
  • The side line on phones: the left or right edge of the screen.
  • Product card selector: for themes where the app doesn’t find the product cards on its own.

Three ways to see it before shoppers do

  1. The preview in Settings: sample shoppers on a sample store, as you pick a preset or change a setting.
  2. Test view in the theme editor: sample shoppers move, click and add to cart on your own theme while you set colors, styles and positions. Only you see them.
  3. A test run: for an hour your store runs as during a campaign, with your real shoppers, and only you see it, through a link. Free includes one, Boost one a month and Momentum 5 a month.

Shop together and rewards

  1. Turn it on in Settings › Shop together.
  2. Add the Shop together block to your theme in the theme editor.
  3. Set rewards: free shipping from an amount, and up to 3 discount tiers. Each can apply only when friends have added something, if you like.
  4. The first time, Shopify asks you to let the app create the discount.

At checkout, Shopify applies the best reward the shared cart reaches. Shop together is on Boost and Momentum.

Measure what it adds

On Boost and Momentum, a control group of shoppers never sees the app: a random 10% on Boost, or the share you choose on Momentum. Each campaign’s report shows its “Effect on sales”, comparing the orders of shoppers who saw Live Shoppers with the control group’s. The Analytics page puts every campaign side by side.

Privacy and cookie consent

Shoppers stay anonymous under random animal names. The app collects no names, emails or addresses, and sets no cookies. If your store asks for cookie consent, turn on “Wait for cookie consent” in Settings › Privacy: shoppers asked for consent see nothing until they accept. Settings › Privacy also has wording for your privacy policy.

Translate what shoppers read

Edit the texts shoppers read in Settings, in your store’s main language. Then translate them in Shopify’s Translate & Adapt, where they’re listed under Live Shoppers.

FAQ

Getting started

Are the counts and cursors real?

Always. Every badge, cursor, cart and sales moment comes from a real visitor or order on your store, at that moment. The app never adds or simulates shoppers on your store: only the theme editor’s test view uses sample shoppers, and your shoppers never see it.

How can I see it working before shoppers do?

Three ways, each for a different moment. Choosing what shows: the preview in Settings plays sample shoppers on a sample store as you pick a set or change a setting, before you save. Choosing the look: turn on Test view in the app embed’s settings in the theme editor, and sample shoppers move, click and add to cart on your own theme while you set colors, styles and positions; only you see it there. Checking it live: a test run makes your store run as during a campaign for an hour, with your real shoppers, but only you see it, through a link. Free includes one, Boost one a month and Momentum 5 a month.

Why don’t I, or some shoppers, see it?

Usually one of these. Not enough shoppers yet: badges show once 3 shoppers are on a product and cursors once 3 are on the same page (both by default), and each browser counts as one shopper however many tabs it has open, so test with other browsers or private windows, or lower the minimums. No campaign running: cursors show only while one runs, on the pages it covers (or always, on Momentum). The control group: on Boost and Momentum a random 10% of shoppers (your choice on Momentum) never see the app, so its effect can be measured. Cookie consent: with “Wait for cookie consent” on, shoppers asked for consent see nothing until they accept. Free’s limit: after 5,000 sessions in a month, badges and the corner pause until the next month.

Does it work with my theme?

The app embed, which runs badges, cursors and the corner, works on any theme. The product page block and the Shop together button are app blocks: they need an Online Store 2.0 theme, like every free Shopify theme since 2021. When friends add to a shared cart, themes from the Dawn and Horizon families update their cart right away; on other themes it shows the next time the cart opens or the page loads. Settings shows whether each part is in your live theme.

Will it slow down my store?

It shouldn’t. The script is about 22 KB (compressed) and only starts after your page has finished loading. In our tests on popular themes, store speed scores stayed the same with it on.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. Viewer badges, the store-wide count and cart and sales moments show on every device. Shoppers on phones have no pointer: they appear as avatars on a short line at the edge of the screen, level with where they are on the page, and their taps show like clicks. On a phone, a few cursors show at a time, or none if you prefer: then desktop shoppers appear on the line too. Turn this on or off in cursor settings and choose the side in the theme editor.

Campaigns

How do campaigns count toward my plan?

A campaign counts once, in the month it starts, however long it runs. Monthly campaigns start over on the day of the month you chose your plan. Ending a campaign within 10 minutes of starting gives it back. Free includes 1 a month, up to 24 hours; Boost gives you 2 a month, up to 5 days each; Momentum is unlimited, up to 30 days each.

How do I know it’s working?

Home shows this month’s orders from shoppers who saw Live Shoppers in their visit (cursors, viewer badges, the live corner or the product block), and on Boost and Momentum what Shop together sold. That shows who saw it, not that it made them buy. For that, Boost and Momentum keep a control group: a random 10% of shoppers (your choice on Momentum) never see the app, and each campaign’s report compares their orders with everyone else’s. Analytics puts every campaign side by side, with the days between them, and what the difference earned.

Shop together

What is Shop together?

A shopper starts a shared cart and sends friends a link. Friends add products to that shopper’s cart from their own phones, and the shopper checks out. While they shop together they see only each other. You can reward groups with free shipping or a discount from an amount, optionally only when a friend added something; Shopify applies it at checkout. On Boost and Momentum; the Shop together page shows every group, what friends added, what it sold and what the reward took off.

How do Shop together rewards work?

In Settings › Shop together you can offer free shipping from an amount and up to 3 discount tiers, each from an amount and, if you like, only when 1, 2 or 3 friends have added a product. Shopify applies the best reward the shared cart reaches at checkout, with no code to type, and only to shared carts started on your store: a cart can’t claim it otherwise, and a friend counts only while their product is still in the cart. It shows in your Shopify admin under Discounts as “Shop together”, and you choose which of your other discounts it combines with. The first time, Shopify asks you to allow the app to create the discount.

Privacy and plans

What about shoppers’ privacy?

Shoppers stay anonymous under random names; the app never collects names, emails or addresses and sets no cookies. It can wait for cookie consent, and Settings has wording for your privacy policy.

What happens if I change plans or reach Free’s limit?

Plans are billed by Shopify on your Shopify invoice. A new plan starts right away; moving to a smaller plan or cancelling keeps what you have until the period you paid for ends. Campaigns that don’t fit a smaller plan are paused, never deleted, and run again if you move back up. On Free, the store can have 5,000 sessions a month: Home warns you at 80%, and at the limit badges and the corner pause until the next month, or right away on Boost, which has no limit.

Can I translate what shoppers read?

Yes. Edit the texts in Settings in your store’s main language, then translate them in Shopify’s Translate & Adapt, where they’re listed under Live Shoppers.

What happens if I uninstall?

Badges and cursors disappear from your store right away; the app embed goes with the app, so there’s no theme code to clean up. Your data is deleted when Shopify asks us to, 48 hours after uninstalling.
